Who We Are

A unified voice for a specialty that never closes

EC24 was founded to unite private emergency centre physicians in advancing clinical excellence, leadership and innovation throughout South Africa. What began as a shared need for consistent standards has grown into a national professional body connecting physicians across every province.

Today, EC24 sets the benchmark for private emergency care — from clinical governance and continuing education to peer support and representation at a policy level. We exist so that no physician, and no patient, stands alone.

Our vision is to become the leading voice for private emergency medicine in South Africa — professional, progressive and evidence-based in everything we do.

What is a private emergency centre?

A private emergency centre is a dedicated facility staffed by emergency centre physicians, providing urgent medical care outside of a scheduled appointment — separate from a hospital's general emergency department.

When should I go to an emergency centre rather than my GP?

Emergency centres are for urgent conditions that can't wait for a scheduled appointment. If you believe you're facing a life-threatening emergency, call emergency services or go to your nearest emergency facility immediately.

Will I be seen immediately when I arrive?

Patients are triaged on arrival, so the most urgent cases are seen first. Wait times vary depending on how busy the centre is and the urgency of your condition.

Does medical aid cover emergency centre visits?

Coverage depends on your specific medical aid plan. We recommend checking your scheme's emergency care benefits before you need them, where possible.

How do I find an EC24 member centre near me?

EC24's member centre directory lists affiliated centres across South Africa. You can browse the directory on our Membership page.
